		<description>Richard has 25 years experience working as an award winning multi-disciplined graphic designer across brand, visual identity, advertising, digital media, and digital product. He spent his first 12 years with Wieden + Kennedy London before a spell at Sid Lee Montreal in 2012 – happily coinciding with the London Olympics. For 4 years he helped live audio streaming startup Mixlr get off the ground to become an app downloaded and enjoyed in 178 out of 195 countries around the world, hosting millions of monthly listeners. Taking a little timeout, he launched a documentary project called The Sustainers, and published his first book about The Sustainable Movement. For two years he travelled to Amsterdam, working with the friendly peeps at 72andSunny in Amsterdam, and then back again across the North Sea to&#38;nbsp; escape the pandemic, and help Gentle Forces get off the ground and secure their first major project launching a global sports brand from scratch. Most recently he’s worked as Design Director supporting a thriving team at Anomaly in London, leading the brand evolution for one of the world’s most loved swim-sports brands; and as a Design Director for a handful of start-ups where he provides design &#38;amp; design direction, support, guidance and leadership across their visual identity, brand and user experiences.&#38;nbsp;

	Brutal DC x SUMA —
Southern Utah Museum of Art

	Work with great people, and the work that you do doesn’t automatically become great. But as a general rule of thumb, it can quite often help.&#38;nbsp;‘Brutal DC’ was the brainchild of Ty Cole and Angela Person. Through a mutual passion for Brutalist architecture, this project represented a natural meeting-point between a talented architectural photographer, and a highly respected associate professor of architecture at OU. 
The resulting exhibtion was more than just a celebration of the last remaining Brutalist buildings standing in Washington DC. It too, stands with a strong vision to help preserve these last buildings, and also sow the seeds for their properous future.
	When SUMA (the Southern Utah Museum of Art) expressed a desire to host the exhibition, Ty kindly reached out with a request to help create the exhibition visual identity. The result was a fully flexible design system that brought together some of the simplistic graphic forms of Paul McNeil and Hamish Muir‘s typeface ‘U_Line’, with the characterful and delightful ‘Raisonée’, by Colophon. The exhibition opened in Cedar City just as the first leaves began to fall during the autumn of 2023. It was such a success that over the spring of 2024, it migrated to the National Building Museum in Washington DC. This time under a new exhibition title: ‘Capital Brutalism’. With the exception of the name, all other elements of the visual system were preserved for this repeat show - now well documented - in the nation’s capital.

	Hyphe
	Every now and again as a designer you get to work on the formation of a brand and / or service from scratch. That can be a surprisingly unusual challenge, as more often than not, ‘something’ already exists. And designers often only get to touch and influence brands at a visual or a comms level - usually as part of a brand’s ongoing evolution. That way, designers get the gift of&#38;nbsp; being able to learn from the successes and failures made by&#38;nbsp; another design team, and springboard from creative paths taken before. 
However, when there’s next to nothing to start from. Not even a name nor an encapsulation of the service. Just a basic idea, the vision and raw ambition of the founders to work with, then there really is no brand, design and visual-system challenge quite like it.
	Hyphe was born at a unique moment in time when the proliferation of trading in digital currencies like Bitcoin (amongst others), clashed with the first of many lockdowns (as a result of the global pandemic). This of course brought sweeping changes to our on and offline behaviours, and accelerated the evolution of our attitudes to crypto-currencies and emerging trading verification technology such as blockchain. Here, our idea was simple - Hyphe was the connection between the new and the old. As such, we made a conscious decision to avoid the visual clichés used by either traditional financial instutions, or their more revoultionary (but equally clichéd) digital currency counterparts.
At a base level, as a liquidity provider serving traditional financial insitutions with a desire to expand their offering to trading digital assets and currencies, Hyphe’s ultimate ambition remains a simple one: Increase access to the financial markets offered by digital asset trading. Hyphe was originally licensed to trade in the Netherlands, but has since achieved a huge milestone with the license to now also trade, and offer liquidity services, in Germany.
	The working relationship has continued since. Through multiple website iterations, photography shoots, the development of countless icons, animation behaviours, product demos, events and live talks hosted by the founders. Here all design is iterative, and as a collaborative team we look forward to all the future next steps.

	Wilkinson Sword - Blade Masters

	Every now and then the stars align and a group of talented people gets together with the same ambition to make a really special body of creative work, and have fun in the process! Great writing helps here too. And it often tends to make the role of the designer easier and harder in equal measure. 
The task then for this project became a very simple one - make an invitation to read. The flip-side of this challenge is trickier because it means resisting the urge to do anything that risks getting in the way of the idea, or the very simple story being told.&#38;nbsp;


	A significant part of the creative process involved selecting the right typeface. (We deliberately chose&#38;nbsp;Reckless Neue because it somehow felt a tiny bit hairy and so complimented the subject matter quite aptly). All the executions you see here came directly from an objective to turn every poster and billboard into an opportunity to reward the passer-by - and raise a smile. For this, giving the role of the entertainer to the pack and the razor felt like a very natural choice and saved the need for an extra superfluous logo. This gave way to an idea that could work inexhaustibly into the future of a razor that seems to almost actively want to perform. Afterall, any expert really enjoys and embraces their field of expertise, and you’re a Blade Master - as it turns out - that’s no different.

Households Declare!
	During the summer of 2021, a small group of volunteers got together ahead of COP26, and wrote an open letter to Alok Sharma, demanding that the UK government take greater responsibility for lowering nationwide household emissions. The no-brainer being of course to offer greater support to a wealth of retrofit solutions readily available within the marketplace to fix our substandard, cold and drafty homes. We decided a letter wasn’t enough, so we created a campaign, a website and social media account, and invited every UK household to declare a climate emergency.

	Zurich Brand Refresh
	Sometimes you only get a month to touch a project. But with 72andSunny Amsterdam and Zurich Insurance, this was lucky to fall during a time where we had the opportunity to establish all the important new rules and behaviours for the brand. This included updates to their logo and sub-brand hierachies, the craft of a bespoke sans-serif typeface called ‘Zurich-Sans’, a refresh to their colour palette and extended use of colour, the introduction of the safe-space logo and shape language, as well as animation behaviours. 
Over the course of this period we consolidated our theory and laid the foundations that created this set of brand guidelines. Collaboration was integral to the process and included a series of design-clinics with the in-house team on the Zurich side as well.&#38;nbsp;

	Audi e-tron
	It was a nice opportunity to work on the photography of an electric car and help to set a more positive trajectory for the future. This was an unusual shoot because anyone familiar with working with automotive clients, particularly german car manufacturers, will be aware that they can have a few surprises of their own up their sleeves; but we made the most of the situation. Following on from the success of 72andSunny’s Audi x Maisie Williams ‘Let it go’ Superbowl spot, this was a further extension of Audi’s desire to experiment with a more real style of photography. This shoot took place just before the pandemic in Vancouver, 2020.

	Sometimes the smaller projects are the most fun, and often helped by collaborating with talented, kind and appreciative clients. This visual identity was very much one of these, as well as being what is commonly known as a ‘brand refresh’ or ‘evolution’. 
As a leader in the field of talent acquistion Holly was clear she wanted to build a simple and iconic visual system that would appeal directly to her audience, whilst also reflecting the skill of what she does, her dedication to a personal service, as well as incorporating a little bit of warmth and optimism so intrisic to her unique personality.&#38;nbsp;

Bespoke &#38;amp; geometrically balanced logo icon and stamp
	We decided to build on the equity of the visual elements that already existed, but refine them to provide a more pleasing set of visual devices that would work with greater flexibility into the future. Her logo icon was recut to be more refined and versatile as a symbol, stamp, and signoff that would help to act as a unifier across all her stationery and touchpoints.

Geograph from Klim Foundry helped to provide a modern but also humanist touch to Holly’s wordmark and stationery titling - The typeface is influenced by Futura - one of Nike’s longstanding brand fonts, who conveniently and historically has been a client of Holly’s from her days at Wieden + Kennedy, and then talent sourcing for the Nike Foundation. We paired Geograph with Adobe Caslon, a typeface recognised for its longstanding reliablility in providing warmth and friendliness to any story or service.

Our approach to colour became all about making relationships, pairings and groups that felt like they were ‘meant to be’. We decided this approach could sometimes include colours that clashed or contrasted if the tension was still pleasing and the chemistry felt good.&#38;nbsp;

	
So a colour strategy of consciously creating natural and delightful matches that were lifting and brought joy, was very much designed to reflect Holly’s role as a headhunter, and her dedication to providing clients with candidate matches that help to elevate the wider team within their organisation or creative agency.
	
The result is a very simple idenity that can be successful across a wide variety of applications, with plenty of potential to keep evolving into the future.
